Learn skills and crafts to create useful items and obtain food directly from nature in a sustainable way. Hands-on practice with great instructors. Class size limited to 10.
Classes generally meet from 1 to 4 PM at Linda Neale's office, 11330 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, OR unless otherwise specified in class description Take the whole series for $99 plus $40 materials fee. Cost per individual class is $22 plus materials fee for that class, if there is one
Cattail Weaving
Saturday, January 14, 1 to 4 PM
Instructor: Melinda Maiterth
Learn to cut, dry and preserve cattails the same way native people did hundreds of years ago. We will make cordage and do basicplaiting and twining techniques. Take home a sample plaiting edged with cattail cordage that could be used as a small wall hanging or coaster.
Cedar Bark Basket
Saturday, February 11, 1 to 4 PM
Instructor: Therese Fisher
Learn how to weave a small basket using western red cedar bark. Gathering and material preparation will be discussed. This hands-on class is perfect for beginners! Bring scissors, a knife, a spray bottle, an old hand towel, a pencil, and an awl if you have them (some tools provided for use in class). $15 materials fee
Hunting: Learn to Shoot Rifle and Bow

Location: 12592 NW Timmerman Rd, Forest Grove, OR. Carpool information will be arranged.
Vici has been a hunter for over 20 years, has hunted throughout the West, and works for a hunting optics firm. Class will include instruction in hunter safety, hunting strategies, the ecology of prey species, and the relationship between hunters and prey. Members will learn about hunting equipment and shoot at targets using both a rifle and bow. $10 materials fee
Skinning, Racking and Cooking
Saturday, April 8, 1 to 4 PM
Instructor: Tom Prang of Trackers NW Wilderness Skills School
Location to be determined
Learn how to expertly use any animal you harvest from an expert trapper and archeologist. During an engaging three hours you will skin and rack a small mammal provided by the instructors. End the day with a community potluck and stew made from its bones and meat. Bring a potluck dish to go with Nutria or Rabbit stew. $15 materials fee
Beading
May 13, 1 to 4 PM
Instructor: Lauri Shainsky
Learn to build and use a home-made loom to create beautiful bead designs for decorations on clothing, bags and other items.
