Natural Way School Initiative (NWSI) Project
What is the Natural Way School Initiative (NWSI)?
The NWSI is a project developed by Rod McAfee and Linda Neale that uses native peoples’ knowledge of history, wisdom, drum circles and ceremonial ways of being to educate, excite and connect people of all ages.
The NWSI provides hands on, experiential ways of sharing and learning that weaves indigenous history, traditions, percussion instruments and songs into the education curriculum. It relies more on sharing than teaching. It’s fun.
Our curriculum communicates a deeper aboriginal story with students, going far beyond antiquated misconceptions and stereotypes to reveal a more authentic understanding of native traditions and culture.
The class is completely interactive and inclusive in the ways reflecting the mentoring model, common amongst indigenous or aboriginal cultures – traditions that are part of everyone’s heritage when we look far enough into our past.
The ceremonial drum is used to teach songs and chants from various native traditions. Everyone joins in the singing, using traditional percussion instruments.
Another part of the NWSI involves connecting Natural Way speakers with public high school students through school and class presentations.
Students share in traditional expressions of gratitude – appreciation of the ancestors, the earth, and all living things – gratitude for all that allows us to gather in a safe and healthy place.
